Description: 8vo, pp. 33. No cover. Offprint of the first contribution of Henri L. Joly to the proceedings of the Japan Society of London. Inscribed (in French) with the author's compliments, H.L. Joly, with his 'chop' in red. Bakemono, literally "transformed things," covers all manner of ghosts, goblins, and those supernatural creatures peculiar to Japan. All Japanese terms are given in romaji and kanji. Some Joly manuscripts are known in private collections, but his signature has not been found elsewhere by us. Joly was a prolific cataloger of collections of Japanese art in the first part of the 20th century.
