Lu Hsun [Lu Xun] (1881-1936) was without doubt the father of modern Chinese literature. The book spans the whole period of his output and includes 'A Madmans Diary' (1918), said to be the first short story in modern Chinese literature because it used the vernacular rather than the literary styles of the past.
