About Us
Our Name
"Bridge of Dreams" is one of those wonderfully hard-to-define evocative Japanese phrases that keeps surfacing. Best known as the title to Ivan Morris' translation, it was also used as a book title by Arthur Waley for part of his translation of "The Tale of Genji."
I registered the domain name a long time ago because I liked it, not knowing to what use it would eventually be put, except as a solution to ever-changing email providers.
In 2003 circumstances - what I like to call "fortuitous calamity" - had me looking for an alternative to what I had been doing for a living, and trying to choose what direction to take. Things seemed to fall into place, and I am delighted to be part of the time-honored profession of bookseller. As my interests were mostly related to Asia, and most especially Japan, the true purpose of bridgeofdreams.com was revealed.
Our Logo
I am indebted to David Chen of White Crane Tea Co. for the gift of the calligraphy that became my logo. The kanji are "Yugen" (Dream) and "Bashi" (Bridge.)
David does amazing things with paper and ink, as well as selling some of the best tea in the world. Call, write, or stop by if you are in the area!
