8vo, pp. 33. No cover. Offprint of the first contribution of Henri L. Joly to the proceedings of the Japan Society of London. Inscribed (in French) with the author's compliments, H.L. Joly, with his 'chop' in red. Bakemono, literally "transformed things," covers all manner of ghosts, goblins, and those supernatural creatures peculiar to Japan. All Japanese terms are given in romaji and kanji. Some Joly manuscripts are known in private collections, but his signature has not been found elsewhere by us. Joly was a prolific cataloger of collections of Japanese art in the first part of the 20th century.

Auction catalog of the art collection of Japanese novelist Natusme Soseki (1867-1916) comprising scrolls, paintings, calligraphy, lacquer, shrines, ceramics, swords, sword fittings, and armor. While his writing was firmly rooted in the modern world of Meiji Japan, his artistic taste showed a deep appreciation for traditional Japanese art. Scarce.

pp. (3) 31 (1). b/w frontis and 13 b/w illus. The classic tale is rendered here, followed by Mitford's personal reflections. This would seem to be the first separate printing of the Tale following that in Tales of Old Japan (London: 1871), Cordier 686. The NDL has an 1889 edition, with no mention of the additional page of illustrations following p. 31.
