8vo, pp. 33. No cover. Offprint of the first contribution of Henri L. Joly to the proceedings of the Japan Society of London. Inscribed (in French) with the author's compliments, H.L. Joly, with his 'chop' in red. Bakemono, literally "transformed things," covers all manner of ghosts, goblins, and those supernatural creatures peculiar to Japan. All Japanese terms are given in romaji and kanji. Some Joly manuscripts are known in private collections, but his signature has not been found elsewhere by us. Joly was a prolific cataloger of collections of Japanese art in the first part of the 20th century.

Small staplebound pamphlet, covers detatched but present, pp. 34. Folding map of Yokahama. A guide to Yokohama for visiting sailors presents the usual practical matters with a surprising mix of history and culture. "Delivery" stamp on cover dated May 24, 1921. Not in NDL.

The first 50 pages comprise a series of articles on armor, swords, tsuba, etc., followed by a complete catalog of the exhibition, followed by 40 plates illustrating armor, swords, sword fittings, arrows, etc. A good representation of the sort of things found in the collections of the day. Scarce.

pp. (3) 31 (1). b/w frontis and 13 b/w illus. The classic tale is rendered here, followed by Mitford's personal reflections. This would seem to be the first separate printing of the Tale following that in Tales of Old Japan (London: 1871), Cordier 686. The NDL has an 1889 edition, with no mention of the additional page of illustrations following p. 31.

229 pp. Pale green pictorial covers, some fading and wear to the tail of the spine. Dust jacket has some damage to the top of the spine and wear on the extremities, and the front flap has been cut both top and bottom though the price ($2.50) remains. Color frontispiece, also used for the dust jacket illustration, many beautiful wood engravings, illustrated endpapers, and chapter headings by Ward. Signed by both McNeer and Ward on the half title page.Prince Bantam was the first of many collaborations between Ward as illustrator and McNeer as author. The couple, who had been married after graduating from Columbia in 1926, published this book the same year as Ward's first wordless novel, God's Man, the first work of it's kind published in the United States.

While inexpensive print on demand copies of this title abound, we only locate two copies of this book at Harvard, one at U. of Washinton, Seattle. Not found at LOC nor NDL.
