Exploring the rich moral and philosophical implications of Chinese calligraphy as it is alive in the meeting of East-West, this volume pairs the works of two philosophers who are deeply committed to inter-cultural dialogue: Peimin Ni, whose artwork features large-scale images of classical Chinese calligraphy in a rich variety of styles, and Stephen Rowe, whose verse offers a contemplative response to the Chinese symbols from a Western perspective. The cross-cultural exchange goes beyond literal translation to articulate and celebrate the human condition. The book contains images and verse by Ni and Rowe as well as commentary by prominent figures in East-West relations, including Tu Weiming, Huston Smith, Elizabeth Minnich, and John Cobb.

Following an introductory section, the bulk of the book consists of over 300 pages of oshigata of nakago and hamon in monouchi, which appear to be life size. Each oshigata includes detail about the blade and it's maker. There is an 11 page section of additional oshigata followed by a 45 page section of additonal detail about sword mountings and manufacture, including drawings of forges, bellows, etc. A scarce reference for the serious Nihonto student. All text in Japanese. The binding of the book is a little loose and the cover, blue cloth, has some mottled spots where the color has been bleached out.
